This study of the social networks of men in community-based treatment programs
for sex offenders
addressed four research questions: (1) what are the structural elements of the
social networks of sex
offenders; (2) what are the functional characteristics of their social networks;
(3) how do their social
networks differ from the social networks of men who are not sexual offenders;
and (4) how do offenders'
social networks change during treatment? The sample included 56 volunteers from
three treatment
programs and a 'non-offender' comparison group of 36 volunteers. Data included
the Social Network
Map and Grid, the Miller Social Intimacy Scale, and demographic information.
When compared to the
non-offender group, the offenders were found to perceive more availability of
support and an equal level
of intimacy in primary relationships. Also, the structure of the offender's
networks was found to change
over the course of treatment.
