Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine the educational climate which
facilitates the adoption
of innovative programs in selected schools in the state of Ohio. The researcher
described the
educational climate of schools which adopted National Diffusion Network programs
for the school year
1985-86. Procedure. A questionnaire was mailed to all of the schools and school
districts (160) that
adopted National Diffusion Network programs in Ohio in 1985-86. Questionnaires
were returned by 82%
of the target population. Conclusions. The results of the study using the total
sample imply that the
following factors affect the adoption of innovative programs: (1) Teachers in
the school district often
suggest new programs to their leaders. (2) The superintendent and board are
viewed by professional
educators as supporting innovative programs. (3) Community leaders expect the
schools to develop and
implement innovative programs. (4) Innovative programs that were adopted based
on an educational
need have been successful. (5) Teacher acceptance of innovative programs is
crucial for their success.
(6) Leader enthusiasm cannot sustain an innovative program without teacher support.
(7) Funding alone
will not ensure the success of innovative programs. (8) A majority of teachers
have 'to be sold' on the
value of innovative programs. (9) Goals and objectives are considered before
adopting an innovative
program. (10) Inservice training is absolutely necessary when adopting an innovative
program.
